Conductor, Sir Adrian Boult
Lennox Berkeley 's ' Divertimento in B flat' was one of several works commissioned bv the BBC in '1942 for chamber orchestra. It is scored for double woodwind, two horns, two trumpets, one trombone, timpani, and strings. There are four movements: the first, allegro moderato, is a kind of prelude and is followed by the slow movement which bears the subr title Nocturne. The third movement is a Scherzo written to the classical pattern with a Trio and a repeat of the Scherzo in slightly modified form. The last movement is a Rondo. The work is on the whole light in spirit and clear in texture, its object being, as suggested by the title, to entertain.
