Hans Adolf Winter was born in Munich in 1892, his father being a well-known cor anglais player who took part in the first Bayreuth performances of Tristan, Parsifal, and The Ring. Educated at the Akademie der Tonkunst, Munich, under
Felix Mottl , young Winter achieved his first public success at thirteen-as a violinist. At eighteen he became second conductor at the Hamburg Volksoper and two years later cam* to England as the musical director of the Moody Manners Opera Company.
After four years' internment during the War, Winter resumed his career as an opera and concert conductor and has been guest conductor of almost all the famous Continental orchestras.
