Regional Geography
' Coast and Highland in Brazil'
L. DUDLEY STAMP , D.Sc.
In this the last talk of the term Dr. Dudley Stamp is to speak of Rio de Janeiro-usually called Rio-the capital of Brazil, with its wonderful harbour surrounded by mountains. He will describe an ascent of one of them, the famous Sugar Loaf, from the top of which at midnight he looked down and saw the whole of Rio in a blaze of lights.
Next he will describe the day's journey by rail to Sao Paulo, the city of Skyscrapers that was created by coffee. He will tell you about the coffee industry of Brazil-and the orange industry too-and give you glimpses of a Brazilian peasant's home and of a coffee estate. And so to Santos, the coffee port, some little distance from the sea, and then back to the coast again.
