Reinhold Niebuhr was a brilliant American academic. He was also a prophet; he looked like one - tall, gaunt, fiery. He spoke like one - plunging into the morass of politics and teasing out their ethical dimensions. Some people called him 'Judgement Day in Breeches'. On both sides of the Atlantic his influence was enormous. Time magazine celebrated its Silver Jubilee by featuring him on the cover.
Last month he died. Tonight in a special "Viewpoint", he is recalled by some of the people who knew him, including The Rt Hon Anthony Wedgwood Benn, MP, Professor Ronald Preston and Roger Shinn, Arthur Schlesinger Jr, the Rt Hon Richard Crossman, MP, Baroness Lee
