THE DUTCH TRIO: SAM SWAAP (Violin), CH. VAN
ISTERDAEL ('Cello), PAUL FRENKEL (Pianoforte)
SAINT-SAENS had a way of disappearing periodically from civilized life, leaving no address, and sometimes giving a good deal of anxiety to his friends. Sometimes he went off to Africa, Algeria, or some place still farther afield, but he also saw a good deal of his own and neighbouring countries. His First Piano Trio was conceived during a holiday in the Pyrenees, when he was twenty-eight.
MAURICE RAVEL holds a place of honour among modern French composers. His position has so long been established that one almost regards him as a veteran, though he is, in fact, just over fifty.
