The noble osprey, a large fish-eating hawk, used to breed widely in the Highlands. It declined sharply at the hands of gamekeepers and trophy-hunters during the nineteenth century, and 1916 marked the last attempt to nest in Inverness-shire. Now the species is trying to regain a foothold in Scotland and is first known to have fledged young in 1954. Since then its efforts to nest have been foiled until 1959, when a pair again brought off young.
