Panorama: Flags, Flowers and Mongoose Men

on BBC One London

'I was appointed by God to lead Grenada.' Just over a week ago tough, flamboyant Premier Eric Gairy led, some say dragged, his fellow Caribbean islanders into Independence. Many fear that Gairy, with help from his menacing Mongoose men, will take the opportunity to tighten still further his hold on this beautiful sun-drenched spice island.
For weeks Opposition Grenadians have been rioting and looting in the name of freedom. As one leader said, with the spectre of Haiti's Papa Doc in mind, 'Independence isn't just flags and flowers, it's about people being free: and we are not free.'
