When the attractive Mrs. Verney asked a well-known Q.C. to help her he did not expect to become personally involved. But soon her marriage and his career appeared to be tottering, and all because of the polite though sinister Mr. Sampson. The Q.C. had a tender conscience; his wife, who had not, would have known how to deal with the matter. But he would not take her advice, and so they and Mrs. Verney appeared to face ruin.
