During the next two weeks the great names of world sport from more than 120 nations will be competing in 21 sports for a total of 1,109 Olympic medals.

Tonight's special programme brings you the sights and sounds of the Olympic city and invites you to meet in action and in person many of the outstanding personalities who will compete for the title of Olympic Champion.
