Composer of the Week: Gershwin

on BBC Radio 3

"I can take a tune and harmonise it a thousand different ways."
Gershwin also said that he had more tunes in his head that he could put down on paper in a hundred years.
Rodney Greenberg features Gershwin playing his song hits and pianist Earl Wild playing virtuoso transcriptions. There are excerpts from the Gershwin brothers' 1930 Broadway triumphs Strike Up the Band and Girl Crazy and from their longest-running show Of Thee I Sing, with its 1931 lampooning of the White House. In 1928, Gershwin's self-styled "tone poem" An American in Paris left many critics baffled about his concert hall ambitions.
