MAROVA (Russian Soprano)
THE CATTERALL QUARTET: ARTHUR CATTERALL (1st Violin); LEONARD HIRSCH (2nd Violin); FRANK S. PARK (Viola) ; JOHAN C. HOCK
('Cello)
Relayed to Daventry
THE third String Quartet was written in memory of a friend, the Violinist
Ferdinand Laub , who had been prominently associated with the performance of the Composer's two earlier Quartets, and who died in his early 'forties, in 1875. The elegiac tone of the music is most deep in the Third Movement, which contains some of the saddest music even Tchaikovsky ever wrote. In this Movement the muting of the Strings adds much to the sombre effect.
