The Sunday Play: Elgar's Third

on BBC Radio 3

The story of Elgar's unfinished third symphony has always aroused curiosity. This is its story, from its commissioning by the BBC at the instigation of Bernard Shaw to the struggle by the composer to overcome his doubts and fears. Martin Jenkins 's production won two 1995
Sony Awards - Best Play for writer David Pownall and Best Actor for Bernard Hepton
in the title role - and includes some of the surviving musical fragments.
