Joanna Lumley in the Kingdom of the Thunder Dragon 10.00pm BBC1
Joanna Lumley goes trekking in the footsteps of her grandparents in the remote Himalayan kingdom of Bhutan. In comparison to the archive film of her grandfather leading a diplomatic mission in 1931, Joanna and her cousin are slumming it. After an uphill struggle for the first stage of their journey, though, they are entertained to dinner by members of the royal family.
But, as the journey progresses, concerns about discomfort are replaced by the travellers' admiration for Buddhist monasteries. As Lumley says, the essential item for travellers to take with them is an open mind. The second half of the film offers a rewarding sequence of festivals, village life and holy places.
