BBC reporter Frank Gillard describes how Field Marshal Montgomery regarded the wireless as the "fourth arm of warfare". The programme War Report carried vivid recordings from the battle fronts of Europe and the Far East. Meanwhile, singers and performers like Vera Lynn, Yehudi Menuhin, Charlie Chester, Henry Hall, George Formby and Noel Coward kept the country cheerful with music and comedy. And in Europe, the BBC's foreign language broadcasts brought news and encouragement to a Nazi-occupied Europe. To unnerve the occupying forces the BBC began its "V for Victory" campaign over the airwaves, in Morse code the letter is represented by three dots and a dash, musically by the opening notes of Beethoven's Fifth Symphony.
