On the 600th anniversary of our alliance with Portugal, Prime Minister Marcello Caetano comes to Britain next week. Michael Cockerell reports on our allies now - a country where British families continue to make port, and the best bullfighter is black.
But Portugal's young men are sent to fight three wars in Africa, from Europe's poorest country. Of Portugal's critics Dr Caetano says: 'How nice to be a moralist... to hold forth before dinner on how things should be ordered in the best of all possible worlds.
