About the year 1550 Sir John Cheke began work on a translation of the Bible. A part of the New Testament only was completed, and this attempt might be considered as one of history's dead-ends. The speaker argues, however, that Sir John Cheke 's translation, besides showing how much more Truly vernacular rhe English Bible might have been, demonstrates a faith in the resources of English which did much to check the Latinisation of the language.
