Oscar Lorenzo Fernandez , who died in 1948 at the age of fifty-one, was one of the most prominent of modern Brazilian composers; he was also the founder and director of the Conservatorio Brasileiro de Musica in Rio de Janeiro. He wrote a large amount of music of all kinds, much of it inspired by Brazilian subjects and based on Brazilian folk music. His Second String Quartet was written in 1946; it is in four movements.
