An Actor in his Time

on BBC Radio 4 FM

Sir John Gielgud , in the seventh of 11 programmes, talks to JOHN MILLER.
7: Alarums and Excursions ' I produced Twelfth Niaht at Stratford with Vivien Leigh and Laurence Oli vier, who was an extraordinary Malvolio, and Vivien Leigh I thought was enchanting as Viola. He was very set on playing Malvolio in his particular way, which was very amusing but to me a little bit extravagant. He was rather moving at the end but he played it like a sort of Jewish hairdresser or something, with a great lisp and extraordinary accent, and he would fall off the bench in the garden scene, on his face!'
