The National Hunt Chase
A commentary on the race, by Archie Stock , from Cheltenham Racecourse
The National Hunt Meeting at Cheltenham is the Royal Ascot of jumping, and commentaries have been given since 1934. In 1934, 1935, and 1936 the National Hunt Chase (blue riband of the turf for hunters and huntsmen, first run at Cheltenham in 1904) was broadcast. The meeting in 1937 was abandoned through snow. Last year a commentary was given on the Gold Cup (the Golden Miller Cup—the Miller has won it five times, and if all goes well is to make another attempt tomorrow). This year for the first time commentaries on both races are being given.
The National Hunt Chase over the Grand National distance was won last year by St. George II, a chestnut gelding which is a fancied entry for this year's Grand National. Archie Stock gave a commentary on a race last Oaks Day from the top of the Grand Stand at Epsom, but listeners did not hear it. It was a test commentary, and he is to make his radio debut this afternoon.
