Bartok (1881-1945): The Concerto Ideal
From the first works that he deemed worthy of opus numbers to the final pair of compositions left unfinished at his death. Bartok sought the ideal integration of soloists with orchestra. In many ways the concertante works mirror the composer's own bitter and uncompromising struggle to reconcile the individual with society.
