Themes from the 70s 2: The Last Empire
In a post colonial world, the Soviet Bloc in Eastern Europe is, in a sense, the last empire. But during the last decade, Moscow has found itself under pressure from within the confines of its dominion, as economic realities and forces of nationalism have increased the pull away from the centre. At the same time, the Soviet leadership has continued to be haunted by the fear of encirclement from the outside, Erik de Mauny presents a programme which, against this background, examines the viability of the last empire in the 80s.
