The Essential Olympics

on BBC One London

Featuring the latest news, highlights and live action from Atlanta, introduced by Desmond Lynam.

Seven gold medals were decided in the overnight athletics, including the 110m hurdles in which Britain's Colin Jackson and Tony Jarrett, hotly tipped as favourites before the Olympics began, were expected to be strong contenders. Britain's Kelly Holmes, one of the quickest of the year over the two laps, was expected to carry Britain's hopes in the women's 800m final, but Britain's men were prepared for a tough time in the 400m final with America's Michael Johnson, the pre-Olympic favourite, competing.

Tonight's live coverage includes a look at how the boxing and tennis quarter finals are progressing, plus the men's doubles table-tennis final.
There's also highlights of last night's key gymnastics performances, with five individual apparatus finals and news of the British women's hockey team's final group match earlier today.
