Goethe's version of the Faust legend has been the subject of at least 17 operas; Gounod's setting of the story was his greatest operatic success. Today Donald Macleod explores Gounod's s readi ng of a story of which the composer said "I could not put it down - 1 read it incessantly, at meals, at theatre, in the street." Gounod Faust (excerpts)
