Wimbledon 78
The climax of The Lawn Tennis Championships when, after two weeks of intense competition among the world's greatest players, the Final of the Men's Singles is decided. Plus the Finals of the Ladies' Doubles and the Mixed Doubles. Commentary by MAX ROBERTSON , With JOHN MOTSON , and Gerald Williams , who says:
'As I go round the world covering tennis for BBC Radio, I am very conscious that several countries are beginning to challenge Wimbledon. The Americans, in the Colgate Masters in Madison Square Garden, in their own US Open Championship and in the WCT Finals in Dallas, are seeking seriously to rival Wimbledon with their promotional expertise, presentation and, latterly, their crowds. The French Championships this year had bigger crowds than ever packing into the Roland Garros Stadium and there was nationwide television coverage of the matches every day for the fortnight - just like Wimbledon. But the fact is that Wimbledon remains pre-eminent. It has everything - tradition, capacity crowds from the first moment to the last, the best players on the best grass courts in the world, the best organisation, the best atmosphere. It's written about and pictured to every continent. Only an envious few would challenge that it is in everything but name the championship of championships.' Expert comment and analysis from FRED PERRY , BOB HOWE and CHRISTINE JANES. Plus the personalities visiting the All England Club for the most famous tennis championships in the world
