The first of this evening's Proms from the Royal Albert Hall features songs of life and death - in the craggy splendour of Mahler's final, unfinished symphony; in the ethereal beauty of the concerto which Berg dedicated "to the soul of an angel", with its haunting echoes of Bach; and in Beethoven's "apotheosis of the dance".
