with John Craven
3: Surgery Without Germs
In a children's hospital in Glasgow, young ALISDAIR [text removed] undergoes a routine operation while JOHN CRAVEN watches. It was in Glasgow 120 years ago that the young surgeon Joseph Lister performed the first ' clean' operation, using his own new antiseptic methods. In a London medical museum there's an old operating theatre where you can see how dirty and dangerous operations were before Lister's germ-free ideas started the safe modem surgery known today.
