One of the happiest periods of Brian's life was duringthe thirties, when he was working hard as assistant editor of Musical Opinion and writing a few symphonies in his spare time, including his fifth, a setting of a poem by Lord Alfred Douglas. Plus a chance to hearthe world premiere, given by the BBC in 1979, of what is perhaps the most profound of Brian's late symphonies, introduced by the composer himself.
