The family home of Combe-Raven is left behind, and Magdalen Vanstone and her sister Norah go to live in London with Miss Garth Magdalen, however, depressed by circumstances, decides to try her fortune on the stage and leaves without a clue to her whereabouts. She has in fact gone to York, and it is here that the infamous Captain Wragge comes across her by chance and takes her to his lodgings where she is introduced to his wife, who is being driven to the borders of insanity by her bullying husband.
