Agriculture
The First Big Business
R. I. James
The depression that has affected American agriculture for many years past, and the concentration of interest on industry with its greater financial rewards, has made us forget that the original ' big business' of America was the conquest of the land and the agricultural exploitation of its wealth, and that the spiritual ancestor of the present business man was the nineteenth-century agriculturist.
In this the second talk of the series, Mr. R. I. James , who is Lecturer in American History in the University of Bristol, will discuss the way in which American character, often imagined to be the product of too great devotion to ' big business', was historically formed long before the Industrial Revolution in the United States of America.
