9-The Heart of the Snows
The story of the Commonwealth Trans-Antarctic Expedition took an unexpected turn when it was decided that the New Zealanders as well as the United Kingdom party should head for the Pole itself. On January 3, Sir Edmund Hillary became the first man to reach the Pole overland since Captain Scott. Dr. Fuchs, who has scientific work to do en route, should arrive at the Pole from the other side of the continent in 1 few days' time. This programme includes messages from the leaders of both halves of the Expedition and tells the story of their heroic journeys to the heart of Antarctica.
