Everyman: The Fantastic Invasion

on BBC One London

Return of the series examining the issues which shape life today.
The story of a 50-year-old love affair between the inhabitants of Tanna in the South Pacific Vanuatu islands and America.
In 1939 Jon Frum, a mysterious man with a walking stick that is said to have 'shone', appeared on one of the island's beaches announcing he was from America and that the Americans would come to the island's aid.
Three years later 300,000 Americans did suddenly arrive to set up their largest base in the Pacific. The generosity and openness of the troops overwhelmed the islanders and the 'American Dream' became a formal religion.
