Like No Place on Earth The story of the Island of Surtsey
In November 1963 fishermen sailing off the south coast of Iceland saw smoke rising from the ocean. A volcanic eruption had split open the seabed. Ash and steam followed the smoke.
Later came molten lava. The Island of Surtsey was born.
Today, it is a black, apparently lifeless, mound in the North
Atlantic. Sightseers are banned. but, with the help of scientists and nearby islanders, Margaret Horsfield made the trip, to discover an eerie unspoilt world which is still a battleground for the forces of nature.
