The Comics: 2: The Grand Old World of Sandy Powell

on BBC One London

Three programmes about the life and work of great northern comedians

Rotherham-born Sandy Powell was probably the only modern artist who shared a bill with Little Tich, Marie Lloyd, Vesta Tilley and Hetty King. He made scores of records and several films. He was a pioneer of radio comedy, in which he coined the immortal catch phrase 'Can you hear me, mother?', and he had an unbelievable three-quarters of a century of 'show biz' appearances.
