Golf: The 1973 Open Championship

on BBC One London

Played over The Old Course, Troon.

The original field of 154 competitors is today reduced to 80 and those tying for 80th place after the previous 36 holes. With a prize list which even guarantees £1,000 to the player finishing as low as 15th, the competitive tussle amongst world golf's superstars begins in earnest in this third crucial round. It was in this round last year that the eventual winner, Lee Trevino, playing with Britain's own Tony Jacklin, electrified the golfing world with his incredible run of five straight 'birdies' from the 14th hole that gave him the foundation of his winning score.
