On 30 November 1967, the last British forces slipped out of Aden, not to the strains of God Save the Queen, but to Fings Ain't Wot They Used t'Be, the ironic notes lost amid the din of a bitter civil war that followed. Nearly 160 years of British rule unravelled rapidly in a welter of pain, recrimination and bloodshed. For both British and Arabs the leavetaking left a deep sense of betrayal.
