GORE VIDAL , celebrated novelist and wit, is an atheist who believes Christianity has been an unmitigated curse for civilisation, CLIVE JAMES , poet, author, recently voted 'Critic of the Year for 1977', is also an atheist, but he believes Christianity has been a vital force for progress in the West. Was Christianity necessary? Clive James believes it was and in tonight's programme he questions Gore Vidal 's views that it wasn't.
