Composer of the Week: Prokofiev

on BBC Radio 3

With Donald Macleod.
When the Chicago Opera commission for The Love of Three Oranges fell through, Prokofiev made for Europe, where he encountered Diaghilev, a meeting which gave rise to the ballet Chout. After the premiere, Prokofiev relaxed on the coast of Brittany and wrote his third piano concerto.

Animato ma Non Troppo (Five Melodies, Op 35 No 3) - Vadim Repin (violin), Boris Berezovsky (piano)
Chout (excerpts) - USSR Ministry of Culture Symphony Orchestra, conductor Gennadi Rozhdestvensky
Piano Concerto No 3 - Aleksandar Madzar, BBC SSO, conductor Rumon Gamba
