Edinburgh Military Tattoo

on BBC One London

Highlights from the floodlit esplanade of Edinburgh Castle. This year the Tattoo celebrates the 350th anniversary of the Scots Guards with a spectacular display of pageantry, music and dance. Making its first appearance in Edinburgh is the world pioneer of military bands, the Mehter Band from Turkey, whose origins date back to the 13th century. And among the 120-strong Massed Pipes and Drums is the Band of Adelaide University, Australia. The Tattoo's 150 dancers, gathered from all over Scotland, perform a medley of Highland and Scottish country dances. The colourful spectacle of the Massed Bands of Her Majesty's Royal Marines lead into the traditional finale and the evocative lone piper.
