Early in the Middle Ages the Easter Mass began to include a trope-a non-liturgical addition to the text-in which the Marys speak with the Angel at the tomb. Moved to Easter Matins, this became an extended Resurrection drama, of which Visitatio Sepulchri (found in a 13th-century Ms) is probably the finest example.
