Ensemble

on BBC Radio 3

Return of the series celebrating chamber music. For many years, the Paris Conservatoire commissioned leading composers to write test pieces for the annual woodwind competitions. The composers also sat on the jury to hear how their music fared. Penny Gore traces the history of the flute and clarinet awards and introduces a selection of the pieces, including works by Faure, Messiaen, Françaix and Debussy. With Emma Johnson (clarinet), Gary Arbuthnot (flute) and Ian Brown and Simon Crawford Phillips (piano). Producer Nigel Wilkinson
