Between the two World Wars, a vibrant European socialist sports movement emerged that criticised the OlympicGamesforbeingcommercial, elitist, nationalistic, and politically right-wing. When fascism started to use sport in the interests of the state, workers' olympiads were organised as an alternative and a protest.
