Programme mainly of Sir Edward
German's Works
In the presence of the distinguished Composer who first conducted at these
Symphony Concerts in 1896 All the works of Edward German in this afternoon's programme were written between his thirtieth and fortieth years and all of them were produced at English Festivals. Chronologically, the earliest is The Norwich Symphony, written for the Norwich Festival of 1893. It has been since revised and the score was published in 1931. He was next commissioned to write a work for the Leeds Festival of 1895. This took shape as the ' Leeds ' Symphonic Suite, of which the middle number in particular, Valse Gracieuse , charmed everybody with its delicate beauty. The symphonic poem ' Hamlet' was written for the Birmingham Festival of 1897. The material of this was drawn from some incidental music composed for Sir George Alexander 's proposed, but ]ater abandoned, project of producing Hamlet. The ' March Rhapsody' was written in the same year for the Royal Philharmonic Society, and later produced at the Norwich Festival of 1902.
