MORITZ MOSZKOVSKI 'S opera, Boabdil, from which this ballet is taken, was first produced in Berlin forty years ago, but it did not continue for long in the repertory. As a matter of fact, although Moszkovski was a most popular composer in his day, his talent was decidedly limited. He was fortunate enough to hit upon the idea of making a number of piano pieces based upon Spanish dance rhythms at a time when Spanish music was practically unknown (luckily for Moszkovski, whose Spanish music was rather of the synthetic order), and, further, of arranging them for piano duets, the playing of which was a very popular pastime at the end of last century. All Moszkovski's suites are, however, quite justly popular. They are smooth, rhythmic, well constructed, and tuneful, and they have, moreover, stood their ground for half a century-a genuine test of honest popularity.
