The Saturday Thriller: Convicted

on BBC One London

Feature Films with suspense, danger, excitement.
Starring Glenn Ford, Broderick Crawford

Convicted tells the story of Joe Hufford, a young man of good background who goes to the defence of a young girl being molested by a drunk in a night-club. The drunk dies from the blow that Joe deals out and, when it is revealed that the dead man was the son of a wealthy and influential citizen, Joe faces a charge of man-slaughter. Despite the reluctance of the District Attorney George Knowland to prosecute, Joe is brought to trial, convicted, and sentenced to eight years in prison. The film concentrates on the effect of prison life on a man who is not a habitual criminal, yet who has to embrace the prison code in order to survive. He is involved unwillingly in a jail riot and a plot to kill a sadistic warder before he finally gets the chance to redeem himself and win his freedom.
