Paul Sexton assesses the impact of American folk-rock act the Byrds, whose original 1964 line-up included James (later Roger) McGuinn, David Crosby, Gene Clark and Chris Hillman. The band entered the charts in 1965 with hits written by Bob Dylan - Mr Tambourine Man and All I Really Want to Do - and Pete Seeger - Turn! Turn! Turn! (To Everything There is a Season) - before further altering the aural landscape with the likes of Eight Miles High and So You Want to Be a Rock'n'Roll Star.
