In the early summer of 1856 William Palmer went on trial at the Old Bailey charged with the murder of a friend to whom he owed a considerable amount of money There were believed to have been other victims - his own wife, several babies (a dozen at least) and his brother-in-law. To the end his mother believed in his innocence: she called him 'my saintlyà Billy.'Ã
