Mendelssohn's love of Bach's music was evident from an early age, and when he was 20 he conducted the first public performance of the St Matthew Passion for more than 100 years. And Mendelssohn's time as chief conductor of the Gewandhaus Orchestra in Bach's city - Leipzig - was happy and productive.
