(1870-1948)
1: True Romance. The instigator and leading composer of 20th-century
Viennese operetta began his career as a violinist and military bandmaster, but the popularity of his Gold and Silver Waltz persuaded him to try to succeed in the theatre, and in 1905 he hit the jackpot with The Merry Widow. Throughout the week, Rodney Milnes explores Lehar's familiar and less well known works, which faithfully reflect the social concerns of the interwar years as only popular art can. With excerpts from The Merry Widow and The Count of Luxemburg.
