Harry Carpenter recalls the rise of boxing's new hero. The Clones Cyclone - World Champion
Barry McGuigan wears the dove of peace on his shorts, but there's nothing peaceful about the way he fights.
In 1985 he went from being Britain's most promising boxer to World Champion. Early in the year he had his most searching examination ever when he took on JUAN LAPORTE in Belfast. It was a test he had to pass and he did. The McGuigan camp then threw down the challenge to EUSEBIO PEDROZA, world featherweight champion. London's Loftus Road was chosen as the venue and 25,000 fanatical Irishmen made the trip to see their man.
