The Sunday Film: Avanti!

on BBC One London

starring
Jack Lemmon , Juliet Mills
Whisked from the American golf-links to the beautiful Island of Ischia, Wendell Armbruster suffers more than culture shock when he finds that his recently deceased father has been having a ' summer affair' for the past 20 years. Family honour is at stake! Matters become more complicated when attempts to return his father's body to the USA are frustrated by Italian bureaucracy, the local ' Mafia' and the concerned daughter of his father's lady-friend. Billy Wilder directs this enchanting serio-comedy with characteristic elegance and skill, neatly side-stepping sentiment on his way to a romantically happy ending.
